Letters to the Editor: Want to Enjoy Nature Without A Permit

November 24, 2009

To the Editor:

The photo of the gazebo near the Hudson is spectacular (see it here).

If it's the one near the boat basin where you need a car permit to sit and enjoy the serenity of the setting, it's really too bad.

I can understand during the busy summer but at other times of year when it's empty and there are lots of places to park, it's a real shame to get a ticket for enjoying nature without a parking permit.

Elaine Sloan

Comments:

Are you contesting the price of the permit or the fact that you have to get it at all?

I personally think that purchasing a permit is not much of a burden (for residents). Though I do think there should be a special rate(free) for seniors or the disabled.

I am not opposed in any way to having a fee for use of the park. I do however feel that there should be some public access time for people visiting our incredible riverfront. Perhaps Memorial Day to Labor Day for residents.

I'm from out of town but use to live in Cornwall long before it was a park.
Every time I come home (Cornwall)I make it a point to go to the river front.Every time I've been there I have seen police drive by. So to me it's being looked out for and I see a lot of the same people sitting around.See if there is an intrest with the retired folks in town that would like to volunteer to man the parking lot. Then during the peak season go back to permit only.

I have always resented the parking sticker fee and believe that as taxpayers, we are entitled to use the park in our own village free of charge. How about mailing us our parking stickers when we pay our COH tax bills? We could include our licence plate number(s)along with our tax payment, and the stickers could then be mailed to us, along with our receipts.

I've been to many seaside and lakeside towns and villages where the parking fee is suspended during the off-season. That also makes sense to me.

You may not be aware that Day Pass permits are available for sale for $5 at most village restaurants and retail stores. It's now very easy to park and enjoy our riverfront without the hassle or paranoia, for a mere five bucks. Certainly worth it, in my opinion, for a visitor to our village. And who knows... you might enjoy a lunch here while you're at it.
