General News: Historian Focuses on Bandstand, 125th Anniv.

It’s been 125 years since the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson was incorporated on December 13, 1884, and village historian Colette Fulton wants to celebrate the date with a program next month that recalls the early days of the municipality. She also wants to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the village bandstand.
On Monday, Fulton told the village trustees that to mark the anniversary she would like to put on a historic slide show and perhaps even some skits of what people talked about at the first village board meetings 125 years ago. She’d also like to re-produce a booklet first published in 1984 that recounts the village’s history. Fulton says it will cost $500 to publish the booklet and, while her office can finance part of the cost, she’d like a donation from the village, too.
Fulton told the board that she also is concerned about the condition of the bandstand, which was inaugurated in June 1985, several months after the 100th anniversary of Cornwall-on-Hudson. In a letter, she recounted all of the people who donated their time and money 25 years ago to build the bandstand, which is similar to a bandstand that once stood in the center of Hudson Street. She noted that as the bandstand committee members got older, they asked the village to take over maintenance of the structure. A couple of years ago, the village budgeted money for a new floor but the money was re-allocated to another project, according to Fulton’s letter.
“You can see that the bandstand is neglected and needs attention,” she writes, going on say that it is still a popular spot of the summer concert series and the annual Christmas tree lighting in December.
Historian Fulton realizes that money is tight but she is persistent in her efforts to preserve the village’s history, especially in this Quadricentennial year. As she said after the meeting, “that’s my job.”
