Letters to the Editor: Kids Raise Money for Muscular Dystrophy

Raising money for muscular dystrophy meant lots of fun at the Quinn household.

To the Editor:

Sometimes when kids set their mind on something, nothing can stop them. Neither bad weather nor hard work could sway siblings Elizabeth and Charles Quinn from their goal of hosting a front yard carnival to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy research.

During a visit to their grandparents’ house during the summer, Elizabeth (a student in Mr. Zwickel’s 4th Grade at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School) and Charles (Mrs. McCarthy’s 2nd Grade) first heard about Muscular Dystrophy Carnivals. The two set off on planning games, making signs and gathering prizes. They talked up the event, hand delivered invitations and received permission to hang a flier in the Hudson Street Cafe.

A handful of friends from COHES volunteered to run the games, sell refreshments and man the ticket booth. On Saturday September 5, about 40 people attended the 3-hour carnival at 55 Duncan Ave. The most popular game was the Ping Pong Toss. Even friends and neighbors who weren’t able to attend the event showed their support in the form of generous donations.

Many thanks to everyone who supported the kids’ efforts by attending, sending well wishes, making donations and publicizing the event. Elizabeth and Charles send special thanks to their friends, Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School students: Janine Clancy, Jillian and Alyssa Gokey, Sophia Espinoza, Elizabeth Webber, William and Andrew Fredericks, and Bridget Wickiser

Together, the hard working kids raised $355.75 which Elizabeth and Charles proudly sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
