Cornwall-on-Hudson’s first yoga studio is moving uptown where it will occupy one of the prime retail spots on Main Street that has been vacant for months.
Yoga Mountain plans to start offering daily classes on August 31, after it completes a thorough renovation of the storefront that once was home to Santiago Couture.
The new yoga studio will be run by partners Gail Walsh and Stephanie Sirico. Susan Olsen, who started the Yoga Mountain studio on Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson three years ago, has re-located to a new studio in Montgomery.
Yoga Mountain classes are geared to students at all levels, reflecting the philosophy of Walsh, who started practicing yoga in 1983. She says her school’s philosophy is based on three principles: core strength; grounding; and freedom of consciousness and imagination. The more experienced you are, she says, the more freedom you can find in each yoga pose.
From her base in New City, Walsh has developed a program to certify yoga teachers as well as a new program to teach yoga to young people by training school teachers to use it. She says that yoga is a great way to help students therapeutically with problems like obesity, stress, anxiety and depression.
At the Cornwall yoga studio, Stephanie will be teaching classes for all levels as well as conducting special teacher certification classes. Classes, which will be held throughout the day, will be taught by at least five other instructors. Pilates and tai chi classes are also offered.
