Police Blotter: August 10-16, 2009

Town of Cornwall Police Blotter

Monday, August 10
10:59 a.m.  Police pick up two dogs, one a German shepard, on Route 94 and they are transported to the Newburgh ASPCA by the animal officer.

4:00 p.m.  Police respond to Route 94 and Jackson Avenue for a motor vehicle accident with injuries,  The driver of one the vehicles, Angel Merced, 29, of Newburgh, is transported to Westchester Medical Center and later charged with following too closely and with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

6:26 p.m.  Police issue a ticket to the owner of a pit bull for allowing it to run at large, during which time the dog tried to attack another dog.


Tuesday, August 11
3:56 p.m.  Police respond to Quaker Avenue and Route 9W for a motor vehicle accident with no injuries.


Wednesday, August 12
12:14 a.m.  Police respond to a deer vs. motor vehicle accident on Route 9W.

2:05 p.m.  Police respond to a minor motor vehicle accident on Route 32 near Quaker Avenue.

2:36 p.m.  Police are flagged down on Main Street by a female who reports a domestic incident.

4:10 p.m.  Police are requested to check on the welfare of a subject and use force to open the front door of his residence.  A search found nothing.  Further investigation reveals that the subject had been served an order of protection and then threatened to hurt himself and was taken to the Arden Hill mental health unit for observation.

6:16 p.m.  Police arrest Brian Deitz, 44,  of Cornwall-on-Hudson, on an outstanding arrest warrant for the charge of menacing.

6:46 p.m.  Police arrest William Boykin, 20, of Newburgh, on a warrant for the charge of failing to appear in court.

8-9:00 p.m.  Police receive two calls about a suspicious person with an umbrella and a backpack knocking on doors in the Angola Road area.  Subject says he works with the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, which has a permit to canvas in the town.

9:46 p.m.  Police respond to a report of a dog found on Mineral Springs Road and transport it to the SPCA.

9:50 p.m.  Police observe that both bathrooms at the town park had been spray painted.


Wednesday, August 13
6:18 a.m.  Police respond to a two-car motor vehicle accident with injuries on Route 9W southbound.  The driver of one vehicle lost control while traveling north on Route 9W in a heavy rainfall.  The car spun around and crossed into the southbound lanes in the path of an approaching vehicle.   Occupants of both vehicles were transported to the Cornwall hospital.

7:16 a.m.  Police observe a large amount of graffiti written in black marker on the walls of the bathrooms in town park.

2:25 p.m.  Police assist a resident who had a squirrel stuck between two panes of glass in a window in her home.  Animal is aided and escapes unharmed.


Thursday, August 14
3:13 p.m.  Police take a report from a mail delivery worker who was bitten by a dog, causing three marks on his hand.


Friday, August 15
7:13 a.m.  Police arrest a 23-year-old male from Cornwall on third degree assault charges, resisting arrest, criminal mischief in the 4th degree and criminal tampering in the third degree.  The subject allegedly hit his father and punched and kicked walls in his house, then resisted attempts to bring him into custody.  Once in police custody in Cornwall, the subject allegedly clogged the cell toilet with toilet paper causing it to overflow.

1:37 p.m.  Police take a report of a digital media system, a GPS, and a suitcase stolen from a van parked overnight on Firth Street.

7:24 p.m.  Police charge 30-year-old Lee Grabe, of Cortlandt Manor, with DWI, operating with a restricted license, and driving on the shoulder and slope of a road after they responded to a motor vehicle accident on Angola Road.

8:12 p.m.  Police respond to a youth home for a subject who was smashing items and acting out of control.  On arrival, the police observe the 15-year-old resident damaging items.  When the officer tried to place the subject under arrest she began to kick and swing at him and bit the officer when he tried to handcuff her.  The juvenile is arrested and charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, a class A felony, assault in the second degree, a class C felony, menacing in the third degree, a class B misdemeanor, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.  The subject was taken to Arden Hill hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

10:49 p.m.  Police take a report of a larceny of a GPS from a vehicle parked on Harold Avenue.


Saturday, August 16
1:31 p.m.  Police take a report of insurance and DMV papers and loose change taken from a vehicle on Algernon Street during the previous night.


Sunday, August 17
1:42 a.m.  Police take a report of a video game system taken from a residence on Shore Drive while the occupant was on vacation.
