General News: Sen. Larkin Awards Grant to Water Dept.
August 19, 2009
The Cornwall-on-Hudson water department will soon start replacing chlorine fuel pumps at its wells in Mountainville after receiving a $5,000 grant from the office of New York State Senator William Larkin.
Water department head Bob June says that the installation of two new pumps has been on hold because of money issues.
He said he was pleasantly surprised to learn about the grant money and noted that his department is one of the few places that is getting anything at all.
Senator Larkin has awarded a total of $250,000 in member item grants for the current year, down from $2.1 million in 2008-09. The drop can be attributed to the shift from Republican to Democratic leadership in the Senate this past January.
Last year, Larkin, a Republican who lives in Cornwall-on-Hudson, gave the Cornwall school district, the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the town of Cornwall a total of $160,000. The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum picked up $45,000 and the Storm King Engine Co. #2 received $35,000.
