General News: Verizon Franchise Approved in Village
August 18, 2009
Verizon received approval Monday for a 15-year franchise to offer fiber optic cable television service to residents of Cornwall-on-Hudson. The television service will be added to a package of Verizon’s FIOS phone and internet service already available locally.
The new FIOS service will compete with Time-Warner Cable, whose 10-year franchise with the village to provide cable television service expires this year and is up for re-negotiating.
The franchise agreement still needs approval from the Public Service Commission in Albany and a Verizon representative at Monday’s village board meeting said that the company expects to submit it in September, along with a similar agreement worked out with the town of Cornwall.
More than 150 communities in New York state have approved franchise agreements with Verizon for its FIOS service. Outside of Cornwall, only two other municipalities in Orange County – the town and city of Newburgh – have approved it.
