To the Editor:
The “River Journey” sculpture exhibit at Donahue Memorial Park, has come to a close. And as I reflect on the past seven weeks, I will say that it has been a very rewarding experience.
In my role as curator and greeter, I met people from all parts of the United States, as well as from all parts of Orange County. Over 750 people were estimated to have visited the show. Surprisingly, I met many people from my own community for the first time, and I learned that, collectively, we all understand and appreciate the transformative power of art.
The words of gratitude and support that I received on a regular basis confirmed for me that art is universal; connecting people from all walks of life and providing enrichment for heart, mind and soul. The artists are to be commended, in particular, for their overall cooperation and generosity of spirit in sharing their creative gifts with all of us.
I would like to share some words of gratitude and acknowledge the many people who helped make this show the success it was. My sincere thanks to Village Trustee and co-chair of the Hudson Fulton Explore 400 Committee, Barbara Gosda, and to my husband and Village Trustee, Rick Gioia. Along with Mayor Joe Gross, their unwavering support of this project ensured that it would come to fruition. Special thanks are due Tom McKeveny, who did a superb job of designing our beautiful announcement card; Mickey Bigg of Quality Auto who helped with the heavy lifting; DPW superintendent Dave Halvorson and crew; Michelle Goldfrank, Bob Gosda, Zach Gioia, Robin Hastey, Miguel Bejarano, Andrew McWilliams, Nina Gioia, Emily Waterfield, the Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department, and all of the many, many people who volunteered to act as greeters. I would like to add that this project was made possible, in part, with funds from Orange County Planning, the County of Orange, and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Environmental Protection Fund.
Sincerely,
Barbara Smith Gioia
Comments:
Barbara and crew: THANK YOU for an amazing event. I know that you all worked insanely hard to get the show put together and realized. It introduced a whole new aspect of our beloved riverfront. Alas, now our mouths will be watering for the next one... And how cool is it that the ship is still there!
