To the Editor:
I agree with the sentiments of the people at the Fire House.
Having been the recipient of lots of hospital care in my lifetime, for which I am most humbly grateful as it was paid for by Medicare and Medicaid, when very ill I was not concerned about amenities or appearances.
What was important was good communication with Physicians, men and women who listened attentively and communicated clearly. directly, and with kindness; professional, caring nurses, many of whom took time when they had it to stop in and talk; accurate administration of med schedule; friendly nurses aides and hospital staff.
Innovations and improvements are important, Yes! However, in my experience, when it really matters, people are most important in good health care.
Medicine is about healing, about me being as responsible as I can for my own thinking and well being. Doing what I can in my life and when I need help, recognizing that and saying so.
Medicine is an art, an integrative art now blending the skills and traditions of East and West. That integration invokes care, respect and assisting each other to be responsible and compassionate towards ourselves and for one another, no matter what the external presentation may be.
I have received amazing health care and met some wonderful people, patients and caregivers both. I am appreciative of that. Sincerely, Jon Tupper Cornwall on Hudson
