Letters to the Editor: Sound System Needs Improvement

July 07, 2009

To the Editor:

I don't know why, but event planners seem to always assume that anyone with a couple speakers, a mixer and a few mics is qualified to do sound for a major outdoor event.

Clearly the system for this year's July 4th stage was WAY under equipped and under powered. I don't mean to be harsh on the person who was providing sound for this year's 4th celebration as I know he worked very hard and did the best job he could - and for that he should be thanked. But for those who put in the time and effort to play for the show and for the audience who make the effort to come out there is nothing as frustrating as bad sound. When the sound is terrible it ruins the whole experience. I have to be honest - the sound system this year was terrible.

I would like to respectfully encourage Brendan Coyne and the committee & volunteers who work so hard to put the July 4th celebration together to PLEASE - make SOUND a priority when it comes to planning and budgeting in the future.  If the budget isn't there to do that (which in these difficult times is understandable), then you'd be better off not having any electric/rock bands and simply restrict the stage to spoken or acoustic music acts for that small in front of stage area only.  As for projecting sound for during the fireworks themselves - well that'd likely be questionable too with an underpowered system.

For anyone who attended this years Riverfest and 4th of July celebrations the contrast in sound quality is immediately obvious.  Riverfest's sound was spectacular! The vendor had the equipment to handle larger electric bands and the knowledge & skill to do so effectively. July 4th sad to say - not so much.

Sincerely,
Charles Trella

Comments:

That was no vendor - THAT was Tom O'Shea, our entertainment guru. The bands bring their own stuff but Tom orchestrates the production. Great big atta boy, Tom!

I was a member of the bands that played during the fest and agree 100% with the opinion expressed above. Although the gentleman doing the sound tried his best and was very tolerant of our requests, he just couldn't handle it. Sojurn, the duo who played a pretty quiet first set, had the songs accompanied by a low to pronounced hum throughout. When we played we were plagued by noises and outages then lost first our monitors and then our mics!, the last 4 songs rendered pretty messy by the chaos. I found out later that fuses were blown and although he had extras he was saving them for the canned music that competes with the fireworks.

We played last year also and were lucky to have someone prepared and willing to do the job. Many folks complemented our part of the fest. I'm sorry to say say that we may have let some people down this year, but it was beyond our control.

Right you are Kate - I couldn't remember his name. But Tom should be at the TOP of the list for sound providers for next year's 4th Festival. If anyone here knows Brendan Coyne personally - PLEASE pass the word along. I don't know if he'll see this.

Thanks!

Oh - and actually Kate - yes the bands "bring their own stuff" but that's only their own instuments and amps. They do NOT provide the sound system. Tom provided ALL of that (and it was extensive). THAT is what is required for a decent show. Well - that and good musicians. :-)

yes, Chuck, that is what I meant. The bands bring their own stuff - i.e., instruments and amps, but Tom co=ordinates the sound, runs the sound board, tweaks it throughout the show, etc. - he is THE MASTER!
