From Sally Stanley, President, Friends of Sands-Ring Homestead Museum
Sands Ring Homestead Museum is looking brighter thanks to two local Boy Scouts from Troop 118. Both Matthew Sweet and Denis O’Keeffe chose improvements at the museum for their Eagle Scout Projects. Matthew not only installed a walkway from the driveway leading to the front porch, but he patched, and painted the first floor office area, too. Denis meticulously patched and painted multiple rooms both upstairs and downstairs, including the Meeting Room and the upstairs office and kitchen.
As former participants in the 4th grade colonial learning and activity program, Matthew and Denis were no strangers to the museum. But during the many months they spent working there, they saw a side of the museum that most people don’t see. They were plagued with poor lighting and limited heat, water and soot from burst pipes, and even a raccoon alert. Yet, they persevered and on June 14, 2009, they will each receive their Eagle Scout award.
The 100+ hour projects at Sands Ring Homestead were the final step in both Matthew and Denis’ quest for this honor. Only three percent of the Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The workload is intense and the on-the-job-training includes planning, budgeting, organization, team management, and most of all leadership. Both Matthew and Denis agreed they learned a lot from their projects and the Board of Trustees is thankful that they chose Sands Ring Homestead Museum as the recipient of their hard work.
