General News: Riverfest Kicks Off Weekend Celebration

The Hudson River is calling this weekend and people who respond to its pull will have an unrivaled opportunity to recall historic sailing days while sampling some simple local fun.
In Cornwall-on-Hudson, the festivities begin on Saturday morning with the opening of the 12th annual Riverfest. People are invited to bring their chairs and settle in for a daylong program of music and song under the tent at Donahue Memorial Park. (Get the music schedule here.)
Outside, along the banks of the Hudson, you can mingle with your friends and neighbors while strolling through the craft vendors and local groups whose work is on display. You can also get out on water in a kayak from Storm King Adventure Tours or take a sail aboard the red-sailed sloop the Woodie Guthrie.
Food will be sold throughout the day and entry to Riverfest is, as always, free. There will be face painting and games for the children, and a big, green park to play in. (Find out how to get down to the river from Cornwall-on-Hudson here.)
This year, the riverfront festivities pick up again on Sunday morning, as residents are invited to re-live a piece of history in a series of activities to mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river that bears his name. On late Sunday afternoon, around 5 p.m., a flotilla of 200 boats will sail into Cornwall Bay, including the historic replicas of Hudson’s Half Moon ship and a typical Dutch ship of the era, the Onrust.
The ships head north to dock in Newburgh and Beacon, which await with a series of public programs of their own.
