Letters to the Editor: Boulder Dedication is Misguided

June 01, 2009

To the Editor:

On Sunday, June 7, at the Hudson Fulton ceremonies at noon, a stone will be unveiled to represent a past that is misinterpreted for a dedication that is politically motivated and incorrect.

I have a vision of that time. Clouds will darken and winds will increase. Thunder will rattle louder than normal and rain will pound the ground. After the dedication has ended, a lighting bolt from the sky will strike the stone and split it in half signifying that our beloved past Mayor and leader Mike Donahue has spoken from the here after.

I'm dedicated to seeing to the removal of this stone from grounds that are so sacred to those that have shared Doc's dream!  Stand By! We have just begun to fight!

Dennis J. Wood

Comments:

This weekend is Riverfest on Saturday and Hudson River Day on Sunday.
It should be a great weekend of Family fun and time to appreciate the village we call home. The weather looks like it will be in our favor and both the Woody and Storm King Adventure Tours will have their boats in the water for RIVERFEST.
Sunday the Flotilla will be passing by Cornwall in the evening.
Abbey the sailor Dog hopes everyone comes and has fun!!

Dear Editor:

I would appreciate Mr. Wood's letter more if I cold figure out what he is talking about. His vision of a time of dedication of a boulder to commemorate the stopping of Con Ed fits misplaced religious zeal. Perhaps he dosen't realize that the fight is, alas for him, over - and has been over 40 years ago. If anyone is curious as to what the Con Ed Project would have done to Storm King, our reservoirs and the Hudson, take a look at the kiosk at the head of the new trailhead for Storm King. Doc's Dream? That a concrete wall would become his backyard? With no intent of disrespect to Dr. Donohue, I was unaware of his fight to have Con Ed come in and deface Storm King in a manner nicely visible for Pat and Mary Donohue at the family house today.

If you enjoy the beauty of this area - perhaps you will admit that, when the earth does not shake, clouds will not darken, winds will not increase, thunder will not rattle louder than normal and the rain won't be pounding the ground - nor will the lighting bolt split the rock. And then we can all stand by and thank those who did indeed fight to keep Storm King whole.

Incidently, www.weather.com is predicting mostly cloudy conditions for Sunday with a high of 76.
The storm at noon would be neat, but if it does not happen - would Mr. Wood concede his defeat - albeit 40 years after everyone else accepted it And those who really love the area for it's grace ... won.

I may not agree with the placement of the stone (it is, after all, *my* spot, and it's just plain awkward looking) but I am thinking that too much energy has been spent on this rock already. Thanks James for a clear headed letter.

Great response James! I also remember back to the "Con Ed" days, those for and those against. That was the past, leave it in the past, I think Doc. would be happy with the landing and the riverfront

Yet another "end of the world" vision that failed to materialize.
