Letters to the Editor: Hudson River Day

May 31, 2009

To the Editor:

We would like to welcome the Cornwall community to Donahue Memorial Park on Sunday, June 7 for Hudson River Day as part of the Hudson-Fulton Quadricentennial celebration.

The festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with the Orange County Amateur Radio Club operating from the gazebo to announce the activities and the historical event to those far and wide.  Everyone is welcome to visit and learn more about what they do and how they do it.

At 11 a.m. the children’s events will begin.  We have environmental education programs and later we welcome the children to participate in the wear-a-boat hands-on art project.  We will supply the materials, unless you would like to bring your own. That will continue throughout the day.

At noon, we will dedicate the boulder to the Storm King environmental decision of 1963-1981.  Following the dedication, we will commence with the speakers who will talk about Henry Hudson’s journey, the history of Cornwall Landing, the impact the Hudson River has had on agriculture, industry and commerce along its’ banks.

Also, we are fortunate to have environmentalists who will speak about the Storm King Decision from a local perspective as well as the national environmental legacy.

At approximately 2:30 our musical program will begin with colonial and river ballads by Lydia Davis and Kathy Byers.  They have some special surprises for all to enjoy.   Then we move on to the Riverbank Banjo Band.  They have a wonderful reputation for old time favorites and heartwarming entertainment up and down the river. Next, we will turn our attention to the majestic Hudson River. The Relay Flotilla with the Half Moon, Onrust, Woody Guthrie, Clearwater, and the local yacht clubs should be an awesome sight from our Donahue Memorial Park.

There will also be exhibits on Henry Hudson, Robert Fulton and the O&W Railroad.

Just a few particulars: Bus transportation to the river will be provided by the Town of Cornwall bus from the Cornwall Central Middle School Parking Lot and Village Hall from 11am – 7 pm.  Handicap parking is available at Donahue park. Please bring a comfy chair and food will be available for purchase.

This is a rain or shine event under the tent!!  Come and enjoy the day to recognize OUR river.  This is the year, now is the time and we are in the midst of it all.  Let’s celebrate!

Comments:

This weekend is Riverfest on Saturday and Hudson River Day on Sunday.
It should be a great weekend of Family fun and time to appreciate the village we call home. The weather looks like it will be in our favor and both the Woody and Storm King Adventure Tours will have their boats in the water for RIVERFEST.
Sunday the Flotilla will be passing by Cornwall in the evening.
Abbey the sailor Dog hopes everyone comes and has fun!!
