General News: Village Protests New MTA Tax
May 20, 2009
The new MTA tax will cost the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson at least $6,000 in additional payroll taxes that are not part of its current budget. To protest the new tax, the village board of trustees passed a resolution on Monday that will be sent to lawmakers in Albany.
The resolution points out that the employees of the local businesses paying the new “mobility” tax are unlikely to use the MTA. It also says that local residents, employers and property owners are already paying five different taxes to support the MTA. It also points out the village gets limited benefit from the MTA and is poorly represented on its board.
The unanimously adopted the resolution and trustee Doug Vatter made a humorous suggestion “that we take a picture of the board mooning the MTA” as well.
