Come build a 3-D boat on Hudson River Day, then take it to the parade on the 4th of July! |
May 18, 2009
The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is putting on a celebration on Sunday, June 7th, to mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river that bears his name. A dedication of the new boulder marking the 1960s fight to save Storm King Mountain will take place at noon.
Organizers picked that day for the festivities because it coincides with the arrival of a flotilla of historic ships, yachts and other boats that is making its way up the river from Manhattan, arriving in Cornwall Bay around 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The flotilla will drop anchor in Newburgh and Beacon, where it will remain for two days.
At the riverfront, in Donahue Memorial Park, families will be able to participate in events all day. Children will get a chance to try their hands at building a 3-D boat to use in the annual 4th of July parades. Beginning at 2 p.m., the event organizers, led by village trustee Barbara Gosda and artist Barbara Smith Gioia, will provide all the supplies for the boats -- families just need to bring their creativity.
Throughout the day, beginning at 11 a.m., people can attend environmental and historical workshops and listen to music, as well.
Lydia Adams Davis and Kathy Byers will entertain the children with folk songs at 2:30 p.m. and the Riverbank Banjo Band start picking their tunes at 3:30. You can also check out the Orange County Amateur Radio Club who will be broadcasting from the site all day.
There’s no parking at the riverfront, so leave your car at home and walk or take one of the free buses from the Village Hall and Middle School parking lot.
