Letters to the Editor: School Budget Vote May 19

May 13, 2009

To the Cornwall Central School District Community:

It’s been a challenging year for the Cornwall school district as well as its taxpayers. While the cost of educating our children has risen, the state reduced Cornwall’s aid by over a million dollars, even as Cornwall proved to be the fastest growing district in the region. Through careful management of resources, the use of $1.3 million in reserve funds, and strategic cuts in all areas, the 2009-10 property tax increase is under 3%.

The School Budget Advisory Committee (SBAC), whose community volunteers include parents, grandparents, educators and school board members, suggests that an evaluation of the district and its spending should be based on value and performance as indicated below.

Achievement:    Our students consistently score at the top of standardized tests in Orange County.

Great Start:    The district offered full-day kindergarten for the first time this year and our children will benefit throughout their school years and their lives from this head start.

Pride:    The breadth of our students’ extracurricular activities is amazing: plays, art expositions, concerts, sports, science fairs, community service projects and much more; we all take pride in their efforts.

Success:    Cornwall has one of the highest graduation rates in the county, and our students go on to great futures in college, the armed forces, specialty and technical schools, and careers.

Thrift:    Our students achieve stellar academic results while the district maintains one of the lowest costs per student and lowest administrative costs in the county; the district carefully manages its resources while not compromising education.

Facilities:    Community organizations use our district’s facilities thousands of times each year. Unfortunately this access would be curtailed if the budget is defeated.

Value:    Our children experience a strong education through dedicated teachers and fine facilities and we all benefit from a high-performing school district that builds community, makes Cornwall a wonderful place to raise a family and raises the value of our property.

The budget vote is May 19 and SBAC urges district voters to make their voices heard. We all share an interest in providing a quality education to our children and look forward to continuing that tradition.

Charles Frankel
Chair
SBAC Communications Subcommittee

Comments:

Mr Charles Frankel,

Excellant summary of our great school system. I would ask everyone who cares about our childrens future to get out the vote this coming Tuesday and show your support by voting yes. Thanks, Pat Welch
