To the Editor:
As the budget vote for the Cornwall Public Library quickly approaches, I would like to explain why I’m running for a seat on the Board of Trustees. My family and I moved to Cornwall because we believe it is a very special place. My extensive volunteer work in the community has shown me what a diverse and talented community we live in. This is especially true of the Cornwall Public Library. The staff has done an outstanding job of offering an amazing array of media and programs for ALL ages. I believe that I can help the Library enhance its offerings to the public.
My passion has always been the arts and showing people that art, design, and music can be a part of and enrich every aspect of their lives. I was able to bring many arts and cultural programs into the Cornwall schools by tapping into the incredible talent we have here in the Hudson Valley. By partnering with local art councils, we can enhance our programs at relatively low cost. This also serves to unify and showcase our community. These programs benefit all ages, but especially young adults, who need to see the connection between their world and the community around them as they look for new horizons.
The library needs to reach and engage young minds in new ways. My middle and high school children have also taught me the importance of using new technologies such as email, blogging, etc. to stay current and in touch. The library has been progressive with its technology, but I feel we need to do more to reach and help more patrons.
Lastly, my experience with working with non-profits has taught me the importance of planning ones fiscal future, especially during trying times such as these. I believe the Library needs to establish a foundation/endowment to augment its generous gifts from the “Friends of the Cornwall Public Library”. This will enable the Library to continue to serve as the exemplary community center it has become.
I would encourage you to show your support for the Cornwall Public Library by voting on April 21st and I hope you will give me the opportunity to serve you for the next 5 years.
Respectfully,
Susanne Vondrak
