Letters to the Editor: Community-Supported Agriculture

March 30, 2009

To the Editor:

The Grail in Cornwall on Hudson is excited to announce its Mini C.S.A!

C.S.A. stands for Community Supported agriculture and is a great way for members of our community to get super fresh, organic, locally grown produce at a reasonable price and to support your local farmers and gardeners.

As a member of a C.S.A. you pay a flat fee up front for the summer growing season and, in turn, receive fresh, local, and organic produce once a week from (approximately) June to the end of September.

The Grail mini C.S.A. will provide (as seasonally available): broccoli, kohlrabi, a variety of lettuces, arugula, kale, several types of tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, raspberries, strawberries, basil, rosemary, oregano, several other herbs, potatoes, celery, celery root, sweet peas, and other vegetables as the beautiful New York weather permits. There will also be once monthly garden events like mojitos and mint juleps in the garden, dinners from the garden, peach weekend, and we're very happy to be hosting a cooking class and dinner with the Cornwall Community Co-op.

A once weekly pick-up time at The Grail at 125 Duncan Avenue, Cornwall on Hudson, NY,  will be scheduled and you will receive a freshly picked that morning bag (about the size of a plastic shopping bag) chock full of delectable produce. It's a wonderful and economical way to supplement your weekly food shopping.

The fee for membership in the C.S.A. is $200.00 for the entire season.

To become a member or if you have any questions contact Marcie at [email protected] or call 845-534-2031.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Marcie

Comments:

What a great opportunity to encourage more CSA and food co-ops in the area! The difference in fresh from a local garden and store-bought is astonishing. If someone is thinking about a CSA and wasn't sure of making a commitment this is an economical and convenient way to get started. This sounds like a nice variety of produce, too. I have joined for a second year in a CSA and I highly recommend it! And, if you have extra from your weekly pickup there are charitable organizations and soup kitchens, like Solid Rock, New Windsor and Good Shepherd, B'way and Mill, in Newburgh, that provide prepared meals and would appreciate the fresh produce.

I agree with Kate 100%. I'm signing our family up today.
