Letters to the Editor: I Support Peter Neuman

March 08, 2009

To the Editor:

At last night’s debate I thought one question was a cheap shot towards Peter Neuman. The question was in regard to his having  represented Kiryas Joel one time 15 years ago. Firstly everyone is afforded to be represented by an Attorney by our Constitution. He did his job and  always did it well. I spoke to two judges recently who had only the kindest and highly regarded words for Mr. Neuman.

Secondly most do not know of his pro bono work. I recently spoke to a village business owner who told me a story about what he did for them. I was truly astounded that a man of his stature would go out of his way the way he did. Not knowing Peter Neuman at that time I did a little digging and found out more. He even postponed a vacation to help these two business owners who would not be in business today if not for what Peter Neuman did for them.

I am no shill for Peter Neuman either as I supported Mayor Gross in the last election and consider him a personal friend. Joe Gross is a friend anyone would want to have. I do, though, throw my support behind Peter Neuman for the simple fact that I believe he is the better candidate. He is a graduate of NYU Law School and believe he has better ideas on how to run our village.

I have heard people are worried he has connections to Kiryas Joel. That is a planted story IMO, and in my opinion could not be further from the truth. I think we are better off having Peter Neumann represent us just on that fact alone as I believe he will protect our interests better just from his vast experience. His experience representing Kiryas Joel was not a pleasant one and he never represented them again. He vows that they will not steal our well water which could cause a serious problem by lowering the aquifer.

He is a man who in my opinion will get things done and not sit on things as has been the case with the Master Plan. I also have met Deke, who redid an old building on Hudson St that is now Storm King Adventure Tours. I live right near it and love it. He turned an eyesore into something wonderful. He also did the same in the town with Woody's, the hamburger joint. Why would anyone hold this against him? I only recently found out it was his idea to restore the old storefront at the food bank (facing Hudson St.). I thought that was a fantastic idea as it is the biggest eyesore in the village. There will always be people who resist any change whatsoever but change that is positive for the community should be welcomed.

The River Bank is another thing I know our current mayor dislikes. Well, I LOVE it. It complements the wall around the bandstand, has fantastic food, and we can walk there instead of driving to Newburgh or somewhere else. It is places like the River Bank, Painter's, and Drew's on the Square that help bond our community.  I hope everyone will give a second look at Peter Neuman and not be fooled by any false rumors. He is a man who wants to give back and I for one would love to accept his experience to run our village.

Sincerely,
Patrick Welch

Comments:

The River Bank was the last of many underhanded shady deals by the former Mayor Moulton. It is clear that Newman will bring back the same unethical tactics to improve his own view and lower his own taxes. Please look at both mens history. Who has helped neighbors in need? Who has helped put drunk drivers back on the road?

I thought it was an important question, and allowed Newman to clarify the issue, which was good.

However I was not impressed by his campaign promises to lower taxes, raise services and pay for it all with grants (from our federal and state tax money).

I doubt that CoH, which wikipedia says is "one of the most affluent communities in the Orange County area", is near the top of the list either for state grants or stimulus money.

Get real, Peter

My Welch, I could not agree with you more on every single point you made. Very well said.

I am also so tired of hearing the negative comments about Mr. Moulton. The man has been out of office for years now. Being a Mayor of anywhere you are not always going to please everyone. I may not have always agreed with the choices Mr. Moulton made, but I came to live in this village during the time he was mayor. Why? Because I loved the village (still do) and thought it would be a great place to raise my family. I personally would like to thank Mr. Moulton because a great deal of that has to do with him!

Actually , Mr. Neuman worked for KJ 9 years ago, not 15. (bad math? selective memory?) The most telling comment for me was when he expressed that the view preservation law is for high-end property owners to secure the value of their property. That pretty much clarifies where his priorities lie, single moms with no summer playground not- withstanding. Face it, he wants to buy a village, for 36 grand.

The River Bank is overrated and the patio is the wrong color; it should have been redder to match the building and complement the gray stone structure across the street. It looks like it got dressed in the dark. Now, the smooth linear facade of the food bank is an old standard here in the village. It adds variety to the texture of the village streets.Think of how much space we would lose for the Halloween art contest! My point is that pretty means different things to different people. Mr. Neuman is telling people what he thinks they want to hear, and that plays upon human nature to be entertained and spoiled. Mayor Gross is telling people what they need to hear, conserve, be frugal. One of my favorite lines from Hamlet; "More matter and less art!"

I would like to say Kudos on a great letter.

Mr. Neuman is truly a wonderful man who does give of himself to others. I am speaking from personal experience. He has the legal and business mind needed to steer Cornwall on Hudson in the right direction.

I feel Mayor Gross is a wonderful man who truly believes his decisions are what is best for this community. However he is lacking the skills to make truly informed well researched decisions.

Mr. Neuman is by far the best choice for Mayor.

I too would like to say "thank you" to Mayor Moulton who has taken more hits than anyone deserves. This community was under his guidance for many years and I don't ever remember the residents being so torn over every decsion made by the governing board.

Susan - is it possible the residents weren't so torn because they weren't aware of the decisions until after they were made? I do not know - but I am distrustful of ANY entrenched government official. Especially local government officials for 20+ years. It may be they got entrenched because they did a great job. But it also may be due to voter apathy and intertia.

I do not mean to slight the former mayor as I have no specific knowledge of any wrongdoing on his or anyone elses part. But I voted for Joe in the last election because I am distrustful of any politician having the opportunity to think they have the position locked up. That said - I do thank the former mayor for his years of service.
