Letters to the Editor: Why I Am Running for Trustee

March 01, 2009

To the Editor:

As President of the Cornwall Historical Society I have had the unique opportunity to know and learn from some very remarkable people and discover the rich history we share as a community.

I have had the privilege and honor to listen to our elders speak of times when the economy looked bleak. This great generation of seniors saw first hand the struggles and sacrifices that needed to be made in hope of success for their children’s future.

Our leaders had to make deliberate, practical decisions that we now know brought our community through the rough times and into times of prosperity. History has shown that the hard decisions that have been made in our past have proven sound.

Today, we are at a crossroads and the decisions our leaders make will be talked about in our children’s future. We must make these decisions with the same deliberate and practical fortitude that our forefathers did before us. These decisions may not be popular but they must be sound. Our children’s future is depending on us.

I have the unique opportunity as a member of Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun’s staff to learn and share with communities around the State as we seek ways to move forward in a fiscally prudent, responsible manner that ensures a sound future.

Many towns and villages are in the same predicament where State and Federal funding has been significantly reduced and local budgets must be cut. Many are forced to increase taxes to keep and maintain the service in which we have become accustomed.

Some have begun looking at ways to utilize shared service agreements with neighboring communities as a feasible option. By contracting jointly, and sharing service responsibilities, we can pursue funding opportunities that will benefit both communities and cut costs to both. It makes fiscal sense and it creates partnerships with our neighbors.

As a Village Trustee I will explore avenues that show promise of success. I will utilize this knowledge to make the tough decisions with a practical and determined mindset to ensure that our future will be a better place and our community remains strong.

I look forward to working together as a community on the important issues we face now and will face in our future and I ask for your support on March 18th.
