To the Editor:
Next month, something incredible is going to happen. Teens who normally can’t go 30 min. without eating will fast for 30 hours! Why? Every 7 seconds a child in the world dies from hunger-related causes – that is unacceptable!
Members and friends of St. Thomas of Canterbury Youth Group will participate in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. They are currently learning about the tragedy of world hunger and they are asking friends to donate money. Did you know that $1 feeds a child for a day (a downloaded song), $30 covers a month (a dinner out with friends) and $360 feeds for a year (can’t get an X-Box for that price)?
From March 26-27, these kids will only drink water and juice because feeling hungry means so much more than just feeling sorry for the hungry. Toward the end of the fast, they will co-host their annual fund raising concert with the band, Within the Walls (www.withinthewallsband.com), at 7:00 on Fri. March 27 in St. Thomas’ School gym. It will feature WTW and other great local bands like Willow Playground, Black Star, Inc, and Afterlife Crisis.
How can you help? Donate money to a Famine participant. Pay $8 to come to the concert on March 27. Say “yes” if the kids ask your business to donate bottled/canned beverages for the concert or food for the meal they will share after the concert. You can also donate online at: http://www.30hourfamine.org/portal/onlinegiving/donate/100120440-001 or contact me at the email address below to offer your help.
At a time when we in this country are all worried about ourselves and many are looking to others to bail them out, these kids are recognizing how good they have it, and they are going outside their comfortable lives to do something that will really help others. Be proud of your kids, Cornwall-on-Hudson, and do what you can to help!
