Members of the committee that stages Riverfest at the waterfront every June turned out for the village trustee work session on Monday night to clear up rumors about whether the village still supports the group’s annual event.
When Riverfest was started in 1998, the village board fully backed the organizers, who included former deputy mayor Tony Ferraro and former trustee Pete Miller. At that time, the board approved the formation of a local development corporation to handle the financial side of it and the village clerk processed vendor applications and wrote the checks.
Faced with new trustees in office who are scrutinizing every expense, Riverfest organizers, led by Wynn Gold, wanted to know if they could still count on village support for the day-long event. The answer, at least for this year, is a resounding ‘yes.’
Mayor Joseph Gross said that he is supportive of Riverfest this year in particular because it coincides with another celebration marking the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the area. A village committee is considering holding its community day celebration of the Quadricentennial the day after Riverfest, when a flotilla of hundreds of boats will be in Cornwall Bay. The two groups could share a tent and port-a-potty facilities, a move that would help the cash-strapped Quadricentennial committee pull off a daylong event. The committee agreed to find ways to reduce the paperwork handled by the village clerk.
The Riverfest organizers left the meeting apparently satisfied that they could stage the day of music, crafts, and children’s activities on June 6th as planned.
