Letters to the Editor: Why I Am Running for Trustee

March 01, 2009

To the Editor:

I write this letter to announce my candidacy for Village Trustee for our wonderful Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

I live on Hudson Street with my wife, Kelly, and six-year-old son, Michael. We have been village residents since 2001. Kelly is from Ulster County and recently became a certified teacher who is substituting at the Cornwall Middle School. Michael attends St. Thomas of Canterbury and is active in many town sports programs. I was raised in Rockland County, and I am a partner in a small law firm located in Pearl River specializing in wills, trusts, and estate planning. I spent several years in public service beginning with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the MTA Inspector General, and a commission that investigated the operations and finances of the New York City School Construction Authority. I am also a solder (LTC) in the U.S. Army Reserve, providing legal services to units and individual active and retired soldiers in the tri-state area.

I seek to become a Trustee to continue my public service and give back to my community and continue the focus on providing dependable village services, controlled spending, debt reduction and keeping village taxes low. However, such an undertaking will be challenging as future village revenues and state and county aid will continue to decrease. Moreover, while fiscal responsibility is a focus, the Village Board concurrently has to be acutely aware of the adverse impact budget reductions, achieved to reduce debt, may have on meeting Village obligations and community safety.

Additionally, the proposed Master Plan, overlooked for many months, should no longer be tabled. Our community had valuable comments for the Board at the recent public hearing and identified many concerns, such as the Duncan-Hudson intersection, which should be addressed without delay, particularly since the state is involved. The Board must make timely progress in examining the Plan’s vision, its consistency with current local laws and adopting the Plan with appropriate modifications and practical supporting codes. With that in mind, the Board should continue to seek ways to retain our local businesses and attract new ones to open their doors to our community.

I am confident that with my experience, dedication to public service, and objectivity, I will be an asset to the residents and the Board in the challenging years ahead. I greatly appreciate your support.

Thank you.

James P. Kane.

Comments:

James P. Kane,

You did a fine job today at the debate. I was impressed with your backround and well as you service to our country. It is great to see a relative newcomer what to take part in such an important job. You certainly have the qualifications and with your varied backround am sure you will be a credit to COH. Serving as an ADA in Manhattan you will balance out the ticket nicely with Peter Neuman a one time Trial Attorney. Seriously though along with Doug Vatter I think the three of you the most qualified so I wish you all Good Luck.

More typo's
"as" well as "your"
"want" to take part

Typing with two fingers isn't easy.
