General News: Students Nominated to Service Academies
January 22, 2009
Two local students have been nominated by U.S. Congressman John Hall to attend a United States Service Academy next fall.
Hall nominated Stephanie Benitiz-Strine of Cornwall to the United States Naval Academy and Rebecca Malone of Cornwall-on-Hudson to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Hall’s office rigorously evaluated students on a number of factors, including scholastic performance, leadership skills, extracurricular activities and community service. Additionally, each applicant had to provide letters of recommendation and an essay explaining their desire to attend an Academy and serve as an officer in the military.
Of the 23 students nominated by Hall, 10 are residents of Orange County. A nomination to one of the service academies does not ensure admission as the acceptance process for each is highly selective.
Any resident of the19th District interested in applying for an Academy nomination or in attending the next Academy Day should visit Rep. Hall's website for more information at: www.johnhall.house.gov/serviceacademynominations.asp.
