To the Editor:
It has been my honor to represent the citizens of the Village of Cornwall on Hudson for the past 10 years. With this letter I formally announce my candidacy for a sixth term as Trustee.
The next two years and the years beyond will be challenging for the Village Board. The Board members will need to deal with the desire of the community for maintained services, faced with decreasing financial support from the state toward that mission. A primary attribute of a prospective trustee will be the ability to control spending and avoid extending debt. I am proud to have partnered with Trustee Fogarty several years ago (during the prior administration) to halt such borrowing and initiate the trend to pay down debt, rather than assume a greater burden. For the current budget deliberations, similar control will be necessary, but in a balanced manner so as not to disproportionately impact the operations of any department in their mission as part of Village services, and meet the Village's contractual obligations. I stand ready and capable to undertake this responsibility.
Legislatively, the Board must move forward at this time with the review and adoption of the Master Plan. I personally have some concerns about the plan, and hope to have the opportunity to address these items in conjunction with the comments and concerns voiced at this past Saturday's public hearing. I intend to utilize my 31 years of experience as a municipal consultant, professional engineer and professional planner to work toward the adoption of an appropriate plan, and, as importantly, adopt fair, usable and effective local laws to bring the plan's goals to fruition, on a timely basis.
On Wednesday, March 18th, I urge all village voters to exercise one of our most precious rights, and cast their vote during the election, and I would appreciate your support.
Mark J. Edsall
