Letters to the Editor: Fire Department Cuts An Insult

January 13, 2009

To the Editor:

The residents of the Village should be outraged at their Village Board.   While the budgetary process has to go through reviews, the Village Board, in an effort to cut costs is looking at a possible 30% reduction in funding for the Storm King Fire Engine Company #2.

I would venture to guess that no other Village department is expected to cut their budget by that amount. I would also ask the Board to compare the budget of the Cornwall-on-Hudson Fire Department with that of neighboring departments.  They would be astounded to find out how low our funding actually is, and how much we do with so little year after year.

Additionally, the Village is considering not allowing the use of the Assistant Chief's car anymore and possibly allowing another Village head to use the car.  Interestingly enough, that car was obtained through a grant that the Fire Department received.  I would think that Senator Larkin would not be happy to know that the Village Board would even be thinking of removing a piece of equipment that was funded for the Fire Company.  In this day and age there is huge liability when a first responding officer (chief or assistant chief) uses their personal vehicle.

The Village has also initially proposed cutting the part-time position of Fire Department mechanic. They apparently are not concerned with whether or not apparatus will work properly, nor if all the equipment is properly maintained.  There is a tremendous amount of regulations that every fire department must abide by - from training requirements to gear requirements for firefighters and much more.

The Village residents should be concerned that their Board wolud even consider compromising the safety of the Village residents by even thinking about such a drastic cut to an already small budget.  This is an insult to every Village resident and an insult to every member of the Fire Department. The Village Board should remember that the Storm King Fire Engine Co. #2 is still 100% volunteer, 141 years in existence, still makes house calls, 24/7, for no charge.

Comments:

Village residents should be concerned why many village residents were driven out of this volunteer organization and how many active members actually live in the village? Bob Langston, Past President SKFE #2

Village residents should be concerned about "Cocoa-Butter Girls from Hartford" wrestling event held at SKFE#2 - who was President then Nancy?

Ah Mr. W I was thinking the same thing! Oh I believe they are located in Hartford

To clarify a few points regarding Bob Langston's reply under my letter - his reply was not so much a reply as it was an assortment of gripes and resentments, that he has apparently harbored for more than a decade, unrelated to my concerns. Bob Langston, although a past president of the Fire Company is also a former member, with the "former" part also well over a decade in existence. The Village FD has members who live in the town, well within FD guidelines. This has never prevented a Village resident from joining the Company. His mention of an event from also over 10 years ago is interesting considering how long ago it took place. Any event like this would be as unacceptable if held today, as barring women from the fire service would be.
