General News: Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
December 08, 2008
A small but hardy group of singers gathered around the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson bandstand Sunday evening to share in holiday tunes and to mark the annual lighting of the towering spruce tree.
Singers from the St. Thomas of Canterbury church choir lead the carol singing, unaccompanied, from the bandstand. Voices rose as well from those on the sidewalk. Everyone swayed a bit and stamped their feet against the cold.
Mayor Joseph Gross greeted people, then lead the countdown to 10 and the magical moment when the colored lights came on to everyone’s delight. The choir lead a the crowd singing “Oh Christmas Tree,” until Santa arrived on the back of the fire department’s ladder truck.
Children and adults followed Santa to the fire house for cookies, hot chocolate, and a chance to tell Saint Nick your biggest hopes and wishes.
The town lit its tree in a ceremony also held at 5 p.m. at Chadeayne traffic circle. The middle school band played at the event, which was sponsored by the Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. If anyone one has a photo of the Cornwall tree lighting – or of any holiday lights that you find particularly pretty this year, please send them as an attachment in an email to editor@cornwall-on-hudson.com.
