The Hudson Valley Gallery in Cornwall-on-Hudson was bursting with people on Friday evening for the opening of the World’s Smallest Stretched Canvas exhibit.
Gallery owner Paul Gould said that 140 paintings, each on a canvas that measures 1”x2”, were submitted to the competition. As the first competition of its kind, the event may be eligible for entry in the Guiness Book of World Record, he notes in the exhibit brochure.
The artwork ranges from abstract to landscapes and tiny figures. In the paintings, some of the painters have captured small details with amazing clarity and others have used their brushes to achieve balance and symmetry in colors and design.
More than 70 artists submitted the small canvases, some hailing from as far away as Houston, Texas, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The vast majority of the artists are from the Hudson Valley and many are from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson. Thomas Munterich, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, whose large stained glass artwork is now on display at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge, submitted a subtle landscape painting. Another village resident, Marja Hazirjian, had three paintings in the show, including a view of the Hudson, and John V. Gioia's portrait of Einstein captured the inventor in black, brown, and white.
Prices for the artwork, which is on sale at the gallery, range from $20 to $675 Every visitor to the gallery, which will be open Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. through December 31, has the opportunity to vote for their favorite painting. A winner of the popular vote will be announced at the closing party on December 31st. In addition, the noted painter Del-Bouree Bach will serve as the official awards judge and will select the paintings to receive monetary awards as high as $500.
