I have been playing hopscotch with my Obama sign at pagnaster park on Bayview ave. I put my sign next to a mcCain sign and the McCain sign disappeared, then one came back, then mine disappeared, I put a new one there, then both were gone. Who ever has been posting the MCain signs I have nothing to do with taking them, and whoever is taking mine please stop. They get expensive for all parties.

Pagenstecher , Pomade, political poster purloining, posting in parkland, pesty sign pinchers. I really do believe that the signs should be restricted to private property, the property of the sign purchaser.

Stephen, Thank you for the spelling correction, I should have checked that before my post. I do agree in a way that some people dislike seeing all of the signs cluttering up the landscape ? isn?t there an old song called ?signs? along that line of thought? If we took a vote in Cornwall that there should be public restriction I could be down with that, but the topic has never been raised (to my knowledge), and I think it is disrespectful for people to take it upon themselves to cleanse the landscape. The argument centered on the idea that the Obama signs are being stolen more. I think in this area they probably are, because Cornwall is a pretty conservative town. In other areas it could be the opposite. Either way although it is disrespectful (and costly) everyone needs to recognize that the presidential candidate is being targeted because that is the most important position there is, and thus strikes the heart of people more intimately than the other positions. I made the point about the McCain sign because somebody, or somebodies, really can?t seem to take those two signs standing next to one another. I thought of making my own sign to stand next to them that says please leave them both alone, and perhaps I will so this weekend. It is probably easier for someone who won?t vote for Dick Randazzo to leave his signs alone because he is a local, and it is easier to view someone as human when you have had contact with them. Many of our state politicians either are, or were locals, including my neighbor, Senator Larkin. It is a lot easier to put aside political differences with an individual who you see getting the mail each day. But I don?t agree with the idea that the signs are taken because they shouldn?t be on public property, if that was the case all of the Hall, Lalor, Larkin, and Randazzo signs would have been removed as well.

Anyone interested in this topic should enter "Ladue v Gilleo" into their search engine. You will find all about the 1994 Supreme Court decision addressing signs on private property. Quiz to be held next Wednesday.

SIGNS??? I think these signs are ridiculous!!
"I voted for xxxxxxxx because I saw fifty-two of his signs today..."
"I am voting for YYYYY because his workers put fifteen of his signs in a row along the road..." (true)
Is THAT what's important?? Like we don't know who's running for President???
Is there anyone out there whose vote was changed as a direct result of your neighbor's lawn sign??

Ilene Osinski,
If your sign being stloen by "THUGS" infuriates you what do you think parents think when they see BMW's speeding down their block where their chilldren are playing. Whom is the real "THUG". Put your priorities in order and take a chill pill.

Lawn signs are an old fashioned way of getting out a candidates name; in todays society of the internet and television they might seem un-needed. But as this discussion shows they still invoke a strong emotional reaction out of people, no matter what their opinions are - THAT is the point of them, to get that reaction. And I never got my pill.

If you think lawn signs don't work, try convincing a campaign, ANY campaign, of that.
The fact is that they all know that, by seeing the lawn signs a number of times before the election, a significant number of voters become sufficiently familiarized with the candidate's name to be more likely to pull the lever on election day.
Like it or not, it's a fact. And, if it weren't, do you think all the candidates would go to the considerable expense, and their supporters the trouble, to put them out there -- and tear the other guy's down?

Yeah, where's MY pill?! OK wait, Pat introduced a new thread -Jerks with cars - which can provide PLENTY of fodder for this web site as they seem to breed in the Hudson Valley. But, Pat we are discussing the sign stealers. These are the same people that steal flags, leave their dog doo in some one else's yard, put gum under the chair at the movies and leave their trash all along Shore Road. Their small little minds in their shriveled little lives can think of no other actions besides those which create sadness and frustration. They are pathetic and need our sympathy(sarcasm) The jerks with cars should just be.. uhhh, removed, permanently.

The only sign I saw that I liked was VOTE. Another good one would have been THINK. Last summer it was the mean skate boarders, now the thuggish sign stealers. LOL It really cracks me up how people make a huge to do about something so small. My kids ride bikes and I hope they are not on next years list of the terrible kids in the village. Ah but yes its ok to get in a nice little BMW and drive recklessly. No thug there. I think Ilene gets my drift as do many of her neighbors. Maybe a word to her daughter as well. Do some get a free pass in the village to drive like "thugs"?

I agree, Pat, it comes down to littering if it is left after the election. Enough energy is expended putting them out, spend half that much yanking them up. Although, I usually 'harvest' a few because if you turn them inside out you can write your own message on them and they are all ready to display, you know , stuff like "Yard Sale" or "Boycott ..." or "Peace". I look for the ones made of that heavy-duty corrugated plastic. Reduce, re-use, recycle!

ahh, but Stephan, that is just the point! if you put them in the trash they are still there, just somewhere else. (remember, "throw it away" meant *away* from you) it is better to re-use them for something or to recycle them, they are generally paper or plastic.
