General News: Village Trustees Agree Police Study Unlikely
October 23, 2008
The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is ready to move on from seeking a study of police consolidation with the town of Cornwall department and may consider a study of its own police department’s efficiency. That was the consensus at Monday’s meeting of the board of trustees who discussed what steps to take since they have not gotten a response to a letter Mayor Gross sent to the town supervisor last month asking the town to join in requesting a study of consolidation.
Mayor Gross told his fellow board members that he spoke with an official at the Division of Criminal Justice Services who told him that both parties have to request the study for it to happen. The problem was, he told the board, how long should the village wait for an answer before taking action on its own?
Trustees William Fogarty and Barbara Gosda agreed that the village has waited long enough. Trustee Mark Edsall compared the situation to a one-person marriage. “Without the town, we can’t go any further with it,” Edsall said. “ If they have no interest, the marriage is over.”
Mayor Gross, however, said he would still like to get a written reply from the town and Edsall, who also serves as the engineer for the town of Cornwall, said he would ask the town trustees for one.
The village would then consider requesting an efficiency study of the inner workings of village police department.
