The ball drop welcomed 2008. |

The New Year’s Eve ball drop from the roof of Storm King Theatre in Cornwall-on-Hudson has become a tradition. That was the consensus of the village board of trustees who listened to a presentation by Ray Yannone about the plans for this year’s festivity.
“I think it’s great to have that spontaneity and to greet neighbors and wish them a ‘happy new year,’” trustee William Fogarty told Yannone.
Yannone owns the building where the ball is dropped. Nicky Correa, the former owner of the restaurant in the Storm King Theatre building, dreamed up the idea of a ball drop several years ago and, with the help of local residents, including Chris Garti, started what has become a popular New Year’s Eve pastime.
The popularity of the event concerns village police chief Charles Williams who says that consumption of alcohol at the event will not be tolerated.
“I’m extremely concerned about an incident,” he told the board, “not necessarily by residents but involving people who come in to just have fun.” He said he will consider contacting the county sheriff or state police to provide additional support this year.
