General News: Cornwall Man Charged With Rape
September 22, 2008
A Cornwall man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with first-degree rape, a class B felony, after his wife reported that he had raped her at their home in Cornwall.
The man, whose identity is being withheld, was also charged with unlawful imprisonment, a class A misdemeanor, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony.
Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said the man is accused of forcibly raping his spouse and of having a loaded firearm. He noted that the gun was not used in the crime.
The man was arraigned before town justice Francis Navarra and sent to Orange County jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
Until 1976, marital rape was not considered a crime in the United States. Since then, it has been outlawed in all 50 states.
