Letters to the Editor: Master Plan Delay Questioned

September 18, 2008

To the Editor:

The major reason given for the village board’s delay in acting on the comprehensive master plan it’s had before it for more than a year: the mayor and trustees have been considering other ‘more important issues first’ (like a new ethics law that might have been completed far sooner, built as it is around a template suggested by the state).

Another justification? Expense.

Barbara Gosda, now a Trustee, who was a co-author of the master plan, told the audience at the September village board meeting that changes would require new village code books to be printed…when actually, only those pages with changes need be printed.

So on this level anyway, a blueprint for the future of our village is being held hostage by the fear of any expenditure involved to make it happen.
Does that make you sad…confused…or just plain angry?

Lee Murphy
Cornwall-on-Hudson
Chair, Master Plan Committee

P.S. On another matter, there’s the comment from one reader that I am ‘…Ed Moulton’s man through & through…’ which couldn’t be further from the truth. Do I believe that Ed sometimes made mistakes? Of course I do. But there’s something else I believe: that Ed Moulton served us with what he considered were the best interests of the community at heart. And I think it’s a shame that there are still some people in the village who continue to devalue the service he gave to Cornwall-on-Hudson for 26 years. I respect him for that, and call him my friend.

Comments:

Lee can you please explain the River Bank quarrel? I'm a little confused.

And let us not forget that Ed Moulton also took the initiative to appoint both the Village Master Plan Committee and the Riverfront Revitalization Committee.

<<let us not forget that Ed Moulton also took the initiative to appoint both the Village Master Plan Committee>>

We should also not forget that Ed Moulton only established the Village Master Plan Commmittee after pressure was applied by residents, whom he belittled publicly and tried to quash - but who persisted in a grass-roots effort to have their concerns recognized and acted upon. Because of his love for the quality of our Village neighborhoods, our current Mayor Gross was a supporter of those efforts, and it is likely that the Committee would never have been formed without his support. Regarding Moulton's honor, well, that is a matter of opinion that is colored by one's perspective -- his victims see him in a different light than those who benefited from his actions. There is a reason that he was voted out of office - and we all probably have different ideas of exactly why that came about.

To John Buescher & Steve Wilkinson:There are a number of reasons for what you call the Riverbank Problem, and they're being adjudicated
in the courts right now,
so an individual comment probably is not appropriate. Just let me say that everyone on the
Village Planning Board,
and almost certainly the memebers of the Zoning Board of Appeals as well as the Mayor & Trustees want an amicable settlement of the dispute
between the parties involved. While the acrimony has taken a great deal of time for the boards to try to resolve, it's also costing the combattants
serious dollars.
I'd hoped for a peaceful solution, but then so have many others...and
that hasn't happened.

Lee can you please explain the River Bank quarrel in clearer terms -beyond calling it a tsuris? Does this refer to the situation when Village property was given to the RiverBank restaurant without adequate public hearing, questionable legality and apparently with no cost to the owner? And we are stuck with the loss of parking and a public nuisance where there used to be a sidewalk?

I'd just like to echo what Lee brought to our attention that "Ed Moulton served us with what he considered were the best interests of the community at heart" This is so true, and he did that for many years longer than I've lived here (that's almost 13 years). The way in which Ed has been treated by a few people recently is enough to put anyone off seeking public office. What a shame.

Apparently many like it because its usually quite crowded. Its a beautiful addition to the village and the food is great and everyone working there are very nice. I think Drews on the Square and the River Bank complement each other and each are positives for the village. I'd sure like to see everything worked out without lawyers getting involved. Don't want to leave Painters out either another Beautiful Place run by some terrific people.
