September 11, 2008
It’s time to harvest the grapes for making wine at Palalia Vineyards and the winery is inviting members of the public to join in this Saturday.
Anyone can come and mash the juicy grapes through their toes but those dressed up like Lucy Arnez will also be eligible to win prizes.
In the “I Love Lucy” episode that inspired the contest, Lucy finds herself on holiday in a fictional town in Italy, looking for “local color.” She ends up with a group of Italian women who either are picking or stomping grapes in a huge vat.
Unable to communicate in Italian, Lucy’s performance is pure slapstick as she dances through the grapes, eventually wrestling the matronly mama as they roll through the grapes. (View the scene by clicking here.)
Jan Palaggi, owner of the vineyard says that the audience will decide on who is the best "Lucy" after seeing them stomping bins of grapes.
“It's going to be messy, and wild and should be a great time for everyone,” Palaggi says. After the Lucys have stomped, other people are welcome to try this "squishy" experience for fun.
The band “The Off Hour Rockers” will be playing throughout the event. The contest begins at 6 p.m.-ish.
