General News: High Oil Prices Delay Paving
September 09, 2008
The high cost of oil is forcing the town of Cornwall to postpone paving Ridge Road this year as planned. Oil is a primary ingredient of asphalt.
Town board member Kerry McGuinness informed the board on Monday that the highway department will do some of the prep work on drainage and other small improvements along Ridge Road this fall but said that a new blacktop will have to wait until 2009.
According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the price of asphalt skyrocketed this year from $306 a ton in January to $758 a ton in September.
The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson paved a small section of Duncan Avenue earlier this summer and plans to put down oil and chips on another section on the road later this month, as well as along Dock Hill Road.
