Letters to the Editor: Letter from the Editor

August 24, 2008

Dear Readers,

Beginning Monday, August 25, people who comment on articles published on News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson automatically will be identified by their first and last names, rather than by screen names.

Why the change? The goal is to improve the quality of the debate about important issues facing our communities in greater Cornwall. In the past, some anonymous comments targeted individuals unfairly or spread rumors that had no basis in fact. These comments did little or nothing to contribute to an open discussion of ideas and practices.

Many people who comment on the site already use their real names. If you want to be sure that your name is correctly written on a comment, you should check the information on the page that appears after you log-in as a user of the site. If you have never entered that information, now is the time.

Of course, the system is not foolproof. People who are concerned about protecting their identities can still do so. But hopefully most site users will want to comment openly and help create a dialogue among neighbors that can serve to enhance the community.

Sincerely,
Nancy Peckenham
Editor

Finally! If you've got an opinion, state it! And be proud of the fact that we live in a Nation that allows us to freely state our opinions WITHOUT the worry of imprisonment. Be Proud of who you are! Barbara Raines....yes...Raines (I'm back....lol)

Bravo, Nancy!
Let's all take responsibility for our views if we choose to express them in public or print. A welcome end to anonymous negativity.

Anonymity has been a major, if not the most significant, cause of the loss of civility on the internet. Comments from the shadows are antithetical to a healthy community forum and I salute Nancy for the effort to banish them from this site.

If one has an opinion and insight to offer, they should not be allowed to hide under a cloak of secrecy. Thank you for making it mandatory to take responsiblity for ones comments.
