General News: Spanish Restaurant Opens in the VIllage

Cornwall residents can celebrate the opening of another new restaurant, this one in the village on Hudson Street.
PortoSpain, a Spanish restaurant, finally opened its doors on July 1st after getting its liquor permit. It is located in the space where Pisces and Max’s restaurants used to be.
Before opening the new restaurant, owner Francisco Sierra did some re-decorating, bringing in touches of his Spanish homeland. In the tapas bar, one corner features a traditional red tile roof with a guitar and ornate wrought-iron designs on the walls.
Sierra, who is a native of Galicia, in the northwest corner of Spain, has dreamed about opening his own restaurant for years. He studied cooking in Spain and has been working in his cousin’s Spanish restaurant in Staten Island since returning to this country in 2000.
The restaurant has a great family feel to it. Francisco’s mother-in-law, a native of Colombia, South America, helps him in the day-to-day operation. His wife, who works at West Point, stops by after work to see what she can do before returning to their home in Marlboro where they are raising two girls. Back in the kitchen, Oscar Berganza, a native of Guatemala, keeps the kettles steaming on the stove.
So, what’s on the menu? First of all there are tapas (appetizers), served at the bar and in the dining room. A mouth-watering array of seafood tapas await you, as well as chorizo (sausage) and other meats. Sierra says that in the week since they opened, the ham, goat cheese, and sausage tapas, along with the empanadillas, meat and fish patties, have been the most popular.
Spanish paella, tops the menu in the dining room, along with mariscadas, a seafood stew. There is chicken, veal and pork chop entrees on the menu, as well as meals for the kids.
PortoSpain is open six nights a week from 4 to 10 p.m. and for lunch on weekends. The restaurant offers a take-out menu too. You can stop by or call them at 458-5417.
