St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and local artist Joy Monte have collaborated to bring her artwork to the pediatric unit at the hospital’s Newburgh campus. The acrylic-on-canvas paintings are fanciful representations of children’s favorites, including Alice in Wonderland, Jack and the Beanstalk, Pinocchio, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz. They convey a spirit of playfulness and whimsy while creating an atmosphere conducive to healing young patients.
Monte, a New Windsor resident whose repertoire includes projects for fashion and cosmetic giants Lancôme, Burberry and Maybelline, expressed excitement about her partnership with SLCH. “I’ve always been inspired by fairytale and myth, so this project really resonated with me, and St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital was a perfect fit,” she said. “This art is joyful and is meant to engage and inspire children.”
The Pediatric Unit, presented to the community earlier this year, was renovated with funds from donors and a $250,000 grant supported by New York State Senator Bill Larkin Jr.
“These wonderful works of art have put the finishing touch on a spectacular renovation,” said Sue Sullivan, SLCH Vice President of Development and Government Affairs and Executive Director, Foundation. “This initiative is a part of our commitment to enhance programs, services and facilities in order to deliver the highest quality health care to our community.”
