The CCMS 7-8 band at the NYSSMA competition. |
May 26, 2008
The Cornwall Central Middle School 7/8 Band and Chorus recently participated in the 2008 NYSSMA Majors Festival. The band and chorus each prepared several selections for the competition and they both received a silver rating.
Band director Steve Kessler noted the hard work and effort of the music students. “It is always an invaluable experience for us to go to an impartial adjudicator and receive feedback about our performing abilities”, Kessler said. “The students and I will listen to the taped comments and discuss where we can further improve, as well as laugh at our silly mistakes!”
The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) is a professional organization that tests New York State elementary and secondary students in music. Each spring, New York students attend NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals to be adjudicated. These festivals take place at local high schools within the fifteen NYSSMA Zones, each of which cover an area in New York State. At each festival, hundreds of students go before music professionals to perform solos they have prepared, along with scales and sight reading. The judges grade the students according to defined guidelines set by NYSSMA. They also write comments, which are returned to the students later along with their grade. The grades are then certified and sent to the school that each child attends, as well as logged by the state. Auditions take place for both soloists and groups, in categories including voice, percussion, and band/orchestra instrumental.
