Letters to the Editor: Parade Grand Marshall Sought

May 22, 2008

To the Editor:
The Cornwall Independence Day Committee is considering candidates for grand marshal for this year’s parade, Friday, July 4, and would like the community to offer suggestions as it has in the past.

The criteria are simple:
-         the candidate should be from Cornwall, or the mid-Hudson Valley;
-         the candidate should have contributed to improving the quality of life in Cornwall, or the mid-Hudson Valley;
-         the candidate cannot already have been honored as grand marshal of the Cornwall Independence Day Parade.

Last year’s grand marshal was Anna Vandermark, Cornwall high school counselor. In 2006 the committee honored the late Jeanne Theis, teacher and Cornwall Elementary School principal. In 2005 the committee honored the Schempf family – Marjorie, her husband Bill (posthumously) and their daughter, Ruth Anne - for the music they have created in the mid-Hudson. In 2004, the committee honored those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, including Cornwall native and West Point graduate, David H. Petraeus.

Please send your suggestions to: CIDC, PO Box 542, Cornwall, NY 12518 or [email protected]. If you have questions regarding grand marshal candidates or would like to participate in the parade, please call Parade Coordinator Paul Korykora at 534-8667. (Of course, donations are always welcome.)

Visit our soon-to-be-updated website at www.cornwall4th.org. The committee's next meeting is at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, at COVAC; new members are always welcome. Thanks for your assistance and support.

Sincerely,
Brendan G. Coyne
CIDC Chair

Comments:

No Memorial Day Parade this year? Too bad. It was a nice tribute to those who lost their lives defending our freedom. I fondly remember both the Memorial Day Parade and the July 4th Parade activities at Doc Donahue's Farm. Cornwall was a great place to grow up.
