General News: Tuesday Vote on $54.1 Million School Budget
May 19, 2008
A school budget of $54, 139,773 will be voted on this Tuesday, May 20, by eligible residents in the Cornwall Central School District. Voting will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cornwall Central Middle School on Main Street.
The 2008-2009 budget request is an increase of 6.28% over the current year. School district officials anticipate that increase will result in a property tax hike of 2.19 percent if voters approve the budget.
If the budget fails to win approval, the school district will have to operate on a state-mandated contingency budget that would be just over $200,000 less – or $53.9 million.
The contingency budget would result in a tax increase of 1.66 percent.
Two major instructional areas included in the budget are a full-day kindergarten program in all three elementary schools and the introduction of two full-time enrichment teachers, one at the middle school and one serving elementary schools. In addition, a part-time speech teacher position has been created.
The introduction of the full-day kindergarten program is heavily subsidized by New York State to encourage school districts to make the change. State aid is expected to increase 19% above last year.
In addition to the budget vote, voters will be asked to cast their ballot for three of the candidates running for a seat on the school board. Click here to learn more about the candidates.
