Letters to the Editor: Lower the Village Speed Limit

May 14, 2008

Dear Editor:
Below is a petition asking for changes to the current speed limit in the village. This is a blanket change that will effect all roads in the village except state Route 218.

I’m currently passing the word through acquaintances and friends that live throughout the village and what I am hearing is that the interest is high for a lowering to 20 mph.

I still need volunteers that are willing to approach their neighbors for signatures. I plan to start canvassing neighborhoods in the next couple weeks.

Thank you.

Here is the proposed petition:

We the people of the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York respectfully submit this petition for the blanket reduction of speed limits to a speed of 20 mph for the entire village with the exception of state route 218.

For the causes listed:
1. Protection and opportunity of pedestrians and bicyclist that have limited or nonexistent sidewalk access to travel our roads in a safe environment.
2. Unrealistic current speed limits in high density housing areas without sidewalks.
3. Roads (e.g. Mountain) that cannot be navigated safely at the current speed limit.
4. The opportunity for Cornwall-on-Hudson to become the first village or town in Orange county that promotes a healthy ecological posture that will benefit not only residents but also open the doors of commerce for a relaxed experience.

Ideas or changes please contact me. thank you
j Buescher

I live on Rt 218, why is that being left out? IF you want to talk about a road that has a speeding problem, I regularly get bikers lining up in front of my house to drag race over the summer and go 50-60+ as they come off the mountain and you people whine when someone does 35 in a 30 or 30 in a 25. Learn to walk on the opposite side of the road from traffic and look both ways as you cross you it

218 is a state road and a different process in which in the near future I would be more than happy to head up

John, Thank you for being polite and civil in the face of abusive, un-informed and anonymous (?) rantings. norbowen, "grow a pair"?? what are you, 15? grow a brain. your comments on the site show a predictable lack of depth to your thinking.
In certain neighborhoods and especially on Mountain Road 20mph is not at all unreasonable. Half of the drivers in town should not have even been granted a license by NYS

The speed limit on 218 does not need to be 20 mph, if you cant enforce 30 mph then I think it is asinine to try for 20, I also think it isnt needed anyway. My neighbors might not agree. People speed, and it is never right to drive without concern for pedestrians, but there is also a problem in this town with people getting their panties in a bunch. There is no need to make the speed limit in any town 20 mph in my opinion, school speed limits are 20-25 mph, are you saying you can only be safe crossing the st. in the same fashion as a 5 yr old? Once again look both ways as you cross. This is nothing but reactionary and mealy mouthed complaining by yuppy cornwall. Why dont we just continue to tax out the elderly and make more rules to limit the kids as we have been doing and then we wont have to worry about pedstrians that arnt limber enough to jump out of the way of a passing vehicle
