The Wall of Honor stood in the village square |
April 15, 2008
Have you seen a piece of village history that has gone missing? Life-long resident Frank Vogel was at the village board work session on Monday evening asking everyone if they have seen the memorial to those who served in World War Two.
Vogel has a photo of the wood structure that once stood in the park next to the village bandstand and he remembers it well. His brother's name was one of the first to be added to the Wall of Honor recognizing all Cornwall-on-Hudson residents who went to fight the "good fight" against the Axis powers in the second world war. The names of people who died in the fight were highlighted in gold, Vogel said.
Vogel told the board that the last he heard, the memorial was in the barn of former mayor Donahue. After that, it may have been moved to the old headquarters of the department of public works. No one he has spoken to -- and no one at the village meeting --- knows where it is today.
The issue of the memorial came up because the Village Square Improvement Association is talking about widening the sidewalk that cuts across the park in the very area where the memorial once stood -- and that's hallowed ground to Vogel.
