Hundreds of little leaguers across Cornwall awoke Saturday morning to blue, sunny skies – a perfect setting for opening day. The rain that had been predicted was nowhere in sight as the ball players, ages five to 16, lined up for the parade from Town Hall to the little league fields.
Leading off the parade were the teams that won championships in 2007. The 11- year-olds’ and the 11-12 major softball team players took their dreams all the way to the state finals last summer. Other teams carried the banner of District 19 champs – the senior softball team, the senior baseball team, the 11 year-olds softball team and the 9-10 year-olds baseball team.
At the field, the Highland Engine color guard stood solemnly by as Tom Quinlan and Bill Fogarty of the American Legion raised the American flag. The national anthem played in the background.
Bob Hershberger, a chaplain at the veteran’s hospital and an umpire since the early 1980s, prayed for the people of many faiths who had gathered for the opening day ceremony. “It’s time to play ball, oh God,” he said.
Town supervisor Kevin Quigley told the hundreds of children gathered in the major league playing field that baseball teaches integrity.
League president John Carnright introduced the league leadership and the remaining dignitaries – Orange County legislator Alan Seidman and state representative Nancy Calhoun. Calhoun announced a $2500 grant to the Little League organization.
One of the youngest members of the crowd, a 5-year-old t-ball player threw out the first pitch, everybody cheered, and the crowd broke up.
Shortly after 11 a.m. the first games got underway as children pursued their baseball dreams on the diamonds of the Cornwall little league.
