General News: Lawyers Are Consultants in Cornwall Schools
April 11, 2008
The Cornwall Central School District is not on the list of those targeted by the New York State Attorney General’s investigation of potentially fraudulent employment arrangements between public schools and lawyers, according to a district official.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday that some 90 attorneys in 180 school districts across the state improperly were put on the books as employees, making them eligible for retirement pensions and health benefits. His office issued dozens of subpoenas to lawyers who may have benefited from this practice at the taxpayer’s expense.
Cornwall’s assistant superintendent for business, Harvey Sotland, said that this district absolutely does not pay its attorneys as employees. “Ours are strictly independent contractors,” he said.
