The artwork created by a Cornwall middle school student has won an honorable mention.
Nick Shaw, a fifth grader submitted a drawing to the 21st Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council Poster Contest of Orange County. His visual representation of the theme, “Being Alcohol and Drug Free is My Responsibility” was one of eight chosen poster images in the 4th through 6th grade age group for Honorable Mention.
Nick has enjoyed art since he was very young. His favorite art material to work in is clay. He was very excited to have been selected as a winner and plans to enter more contests in the future.
Nick did a great job with his image. On one side he pictured a bar environment and on the other is a boy riding a bicycle outdoors. Cornwall High School chose the theme for this year’s contest and was also among the winners.
All of the participants use their artistic skills to invent images that create messages about important topics. Approximately 2,000 students from schools throughout Orange County participated. Along with first, second and third place winners, artists receiving the Honorable Mention Award were recognized at a ceremony in Middletown where county executive Edward Diana recognized student achievement and passed out awards.
