On Sunday, February 10, the 78th birthday of the Boy Scouts was celebrated at a luncheon at the West Point Officers Club, which offers spectacular views of the Hudson River. The yearly Blue and Gold celebration brought 85 people together who were entertained by the USMA Drill team. In attendance were pack commissioner, Walter Koch, who continues to support and guide scouts on many levels, representatives from Boy Scout troops 118 and 206, both local troops, and police officer Jill Nye of Cornwall-on-Hudson.
This year only one boy from Cornwall-on-Hudson’s pack 6 made the crossover from Cub Scout to Boy Scouts. Frankie Orlando crossed the bridge and will begin his membership as a part of troop 118 led by Scoutmaster Ron Jurain. Frankie is described by the Cub Scout committee chair, Wendy Cucci, as tenacious in his efforts. Frankie says that his goal in becoming a boy scout is to “go all the way and to become an eagle scout”. It sounds as if Frankie intends stay true to his past record!
Frankie Orlando achieved the highest honor in cub scouting, known as the Arrow of Light and also the Heavy Shoulder award. It is called the Heavy Shoulder award because of its weight in pins and it acknowledges the accomplishment of 20 achievements with a pin for each.
The United States Military Drill team gave an astonishing performance and afterward answered questions posed by the scouts. It was truly memorable! The scouts’ next event is the annual Pinewood Derby which will be held at Cornwall on Hudson’s Elementary School at 7PM on Friday, February 29, 2008. The scouts also generously donated to our troops in Iraq as a reminder of our gratitude and appreciation to them.
