General News: Boy Dies of Flu; Shots Still Available
February 07, 2008
Orange County health officials are encouraging residents to get a flu shot if they haven’t gotten one already following the death of a local child.
A seven-year-old boy from Cornwall died early Monday from influenza type B, according to the Orange County Health Department.
The boy, who had a history of asthma, lost his fight against the infection while being treated at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
Chris Dunleavy, the deputy commissioner of health for the county, said that county clinics in Newburgh, Middletown, and Goshen will be offering flu shots through the month of February. He also notes that the virus is widespread throughout the state and that flu season typically has two peaks. One has already occurred and the second one is still coming, he says.
For more information on getting a flu shot, call the health department at (845) 291-4300.
