General News: Food Grown Close to Home
|
Farms preserve the landscape. |
|
Locally-grown produce helps the environment, too. |
February 05, 2008
If you love to eat locally-grown produce, not just because it tastes good but because it reduces carbon emissions by avoiding the need to transport food across long distances, there are some new opportunities sprouting up in Cornwall.
A new program out of Middletown, Abundant Life Farm, is offering to deliver fresh produce to any group of ten or more who each have food orders for $50 or more. Abundant Life calls the service the Local Virtual Farm Stand and consumers can sign up on the farm’s website at www.abundantlifefarm.com. The virtual farm stand also will depend on the participation of local farmers who will provide a weekly list of produce available for sale. Abundant Life expects to be up and running by early April, so if you’re interested, sign up today.
You can also pick up fresh organic produce directly from farmer Guy Jones by visiting Blooming Hill Farm, in Blooming Grove, open during the winter on Saturdays. The farm invites people to join the Community Supported Agriculture program, in which you purchase shares of the produce at the farm. The program provides a stable market for the farm and a steady supply of organic products at a reduced cost to the consumer.
Meanwhile, a group of Cornwall-on-Hudson residents is exploring the feasibility of establishing a food cooperative that would feature locally- grown products and serve as a center for education and community interaction on the benefits of fresh and local food.
Stella Quinn, who has worked with Blooming Hill Farm, is conducting research and talking with local farmers, consumers, community organizations and food service operations to determine whether there is sufficient demand for a village-based local food cooperative.
The group will soon distribute a community-wide survey to determine consumer interest and will explore potential collaboration with the virtual farm stand being set up by the Abundant Life Farm as well as other ideas about how to bring fresh locally-grown food to your home.
